Thaxton Rites in Cherokee
Funeral services for Cora Lou Thaxton, 72, of Cherokee, were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, at the Church of Christ in Cherokee with minister Richard Robbins officiating, assisted by Minister C. W. Hoover.
A resident of the county since her marriage in 1902 to the late John B. Thaxton, she died at 6:31 a.m. Sunday at the Thaxton residence in Cherokee after having been in ill health since September.
Surviving are three sons, Leslie B. Thaxton of Dallas, John N. Thaxton of Cherokee and Hugh B. Thaxton of Cherokee; two brothers, H. L. Barber of Dallas and W. W. Barber of Ft. Worth; two sisters, Mrs. T. R. Martin of Snyder and Mrs. W. H. Williamson of Rochelle; two grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A native of Burnet where she was born, June 18, 1878, she was the daughter of Hugh Smith Barber and the former Latitia Williams. She had been a member of the Church of Christ since she was 16 years old.
Pallbearers were Woodie Le*berg, Ellis Randolph, Warren Randolph, Peter Griffith and Hence Lock.
Assisting with the flowers were Mrs. Price Griffith, Mrs. Ellis Randolph, Mrs. Hence Lock and Mrs. Jim Walker.
Burial was in the Hanna Cemetery, with Howell-Doran funeral directors of San Saba officiating.

JNO. B. THAXTON DIES
Jno. B. Thaxton of Cherokee died rather
suddenly in a Fort Worth Sanatarium Monday morning. The body was shipped
home, passing thru San Saba Wednesday, for burial. Mr. Thaxton had been in
poor health for some time. He returned about a week ago from Temple, where
he got no satisfaction. Thursday he passed here on his way to Fort
Worth.
Deceased was past 60 years of age and has
lived in the Cherokee community for a long time. Some twenty years ago he
was married to a Miss Barber of near Pontotoc and to them were born three
children. He was at one time deputy sheriff of the county for two
terms. He was a good citizen, a charitable neighbor and always aligned
himself with the educational and religious elements for the development of the
community and county.

Johnnie (Cotton) Thornton, 73, of San Saba passed away
Monday, May 3, 2010, in a local care facility. Johnnie was born August 31, 1936,
in San Saba, to Sebern Thornton and Alice Jackson Thornton. He married Jeannean
Hall on December 20, 1963, in Brownwood, Texas.
Johnnie worked in the
construction industry as a contractor. He served in the U. S. Navy and was a
member of the Pecan Grove Baptist Church.
Johnnie is survived by his wife
Jeannean Thornton of San Saba; two sons Terry Thornton of San Saba, Dale
Thornton and his wife Tracy of Austin; one daughter Cristy Thornton of San Saba.
He is also survived by two brothers Jimmy Thornton of San Angelo, Richard
Thornton and his wife Leota of Austin; one sister-in-law Elyse Peavy, three
grandchildren Kinley, Carley, and Jackson Thornton, and several nieces and
nephews.
Johnnie was preceded in death by his parents and one brother
Edward Thornton.
Graveside service were held Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at
10:00 A.M. at the San Saba Cemetery with Rev. Stuart Beckwith,
officiating.
